People power
On March 7 we experienced democracy at its best. The Mendota Heights City Council had been poised to issue to Xcel Energy a permit to build a new transmission power line through the city.
A large group of Mendota Heights residents mostly mothers of small children organized an effort to prevail upon the council to change its mind. In a little over a week, 740 signatures were collected on petitions. At the meeting, approximately 85 Mendota Heights residents attended and shared their concerns with the council.
The council members listened with respect and attention. And in the end, the council shifted its position and voted to deny the line. A special commendation should go to council member Mary Jeanne Schneeman, who reversed her previous position, never an easy thing to do.
